Food price data

We track the prices of eight basic food products widely used around the world: beef, cooking oil, eggs, flour, milk, poultry, rice, salt, and sugar. These products serve both household consumption and industrial food production. The coverage is about 80 countries.

Data Collection Process

We collect prices monthly from original sources, without automation. Our team of economists reviews the sources and manually inputs the data into our database. The data are then thoroughly checked by other team members to ensure accuracy. Our goal is to build a consistent and comparable database of food prices across countries and over time. These data series are valuable for producers, traders, and analysts interested in agricultural pricing trends. Here is a brief description of our methods

Subscriptions

On our website, we display historical prices, while subscribers receive the latest data via email on a monthly or quarterly basis. Our Excel files include matching U.S. dollar exchange rates, allowing local currency prices to be converted for easy comparison. The cost of subscriptions depends on:
  • The number of countries and products selected
  • The data frequency: monthly, quarterly, or annual
We offer substantial discounts for multiple countries and years. At all times, we are available to answer questions about data trends and methodology, as transparency in our sources and methods is a key component of our work.

Data Download Options

The data can also be downloaded directly from our data download page, where users can select:
  • Countries
  • Products
  • Time periods
Before downloading, users can generate Excel files in just a few clicks. As with subscriptions, we are happy to provide additional information and answer questions that help interpret the data. The cost of direct data downloads from our website is clearly displayed when making selections.
